Vulture's Roost Update...Coffin bed frames done ~

Here are the frames of my coffin beds ~ I cut them out of wood scraps and after much sanding and glue was able to get them together ~ I hid my bad seams with tiny wood trim and sanded some more ~ I thought they needed legs so I glued on some plastic skull beads for legs ~ I then glued on some small filigree pieces and some skull buttons with the shanks cut off, Thank you Kat for the buttons ~

After all my glue was dry I coated everything with black paint ~
Next step was a coat of red paint to edges and top of beds ~

Next a coat of crackle medium was added over the red paint ~ This needs to dry at least an hour ~

Next step is to give the red a coat of black paint ~ this step is a bit tricky, you can only drag the brush on the surface once or your crackle won't take right ~ Next I will add a little highlighting to bring out the detailing of the skulls ~

The beds have been highlighted with a dry brushing of gold ~

The beds need to be sealed now ~ The next step will be to make liners and bedding ~ Blog friend Susan is kindly sending me some scraps of red silk and velvet for the bedding ~ Susan's blog Ask Tabitha  is full How To information for miniaturists, be sure to check it out ~ I am open to ideas for head boards, I'm not sure if they are needed, the wall has a slope so they couldn't be that tall ~

Everyone have a Wonderful Weekend
Victoria ❤

  1. I had to stop watching my programme to comment! lol I just LOVE these and was going to ask what kit did you use, only to see that you made them from scratch! Just superb!!! I have a coffin in my witch's garden, but I made that from a kit and that was a challenge!! I can't wait to see them lined. :o)

  2. They look great, Well done, I don't think they need head boards, but maybe a coffin lid propped up by them or something

  3. Michelle, Thank you. They were very difficult to build, I used a pattern for making a card stock coffin that you fold and glue. I am going to make a few for my Etsy shop to sell now that I have it down. They will have a nicer finish.

Thank you Penni, I don't know if there will be room for lids. I need to stick them in the room.

    Thank you Debie-Kins!

  8. Vicky I know by experience how difficult coffins are to make, all those angles! I made my tiny one for Ara and I had lots of bits to hide too with lots of paint to fill the corners he he! Yours are so fantastic I love them. You can buy 1 12th scale coffins here in the UK Ill find a link for you, as maybe you could also buy some and repaint and style them, add legs , detailing etc? They have lids too, Ive done a couple myself and even made shelf units from them which looked cool! Not nearly as fab as yours of course these are so original!

  10. That's some kind of "Build a better home for vampyres"... You put so much effort in the different coats - and the result is amazing (Even though I must admit I can't discover the crackles on the pics). The idea of using that skull pearls as legs is superb.

    Greetings

    Thank you Annie :)

Thank you for the link Kate. Yes they are difficult, I started another last night. I have seen shelves made out of them come to think of it. I love the coffin pram you made Ara.

  12. Wow! These are great, Vicki. The detailing is just what I would expect from you :-) I have seen some unfinished coffin shapes at recent mini shows, I think Ron's Miniatures had some. I'll look into that if you'd like.

  13. Thank you Birgit, I can see it in my pictures but not well. I should have used my macro setting, I was trying to get my pictures while I still had natural light.

  14. Thank you Susan! I will google Ron's. I would rather make my own as I have piles of wood and could keep the cost down a bit. I need to find a better pattern tho.

  18. Very Creepy, Victoria! Perhaps the bed heads should be the lids ... but hinged on the side and standing open.... a sideways bed like a daybed? I seem to recall ALL the vampires I've ever seen (none in real life! LOL) climb out of coffins with the lids open on the side. One has to be able to CLOSE them in the Daytime after all! :)

  19. Thank you Ewa :)

You are right Wendie, it takes a little practice.

    Thank you Julie :)

I know Betsy, I don't have room in the tiny space for them to have lids. I might put them against the wall or proped by each coffin. I always seem to have these problems :)

    Thank you Mags :)

  21. Fantastic!!! I love the finish- just perfect for a coffin! This will be an amazing house- I don't comment all the time, but I read each post and I think you are doing a wondeful job! I don't think these even need headboards- by the time you put in the lining they will be amazing just as they are!
